Description:

Bringing diversity into the newsroom – a train-the-trainers Mastercourse on the basis of the EBU’s Diversity Toolkit for factual programmes in public service journalism

Flyer on the toolkit: English version & French version

How can TV professionals better reflect the diversity of societies on screen? How should cultural diversity in television, especially in news and current affairs programmes, be handled?

These are a few questions addressed in the EBU’s “Diversity Toolkit for factual programmes in public service television”. The Toolkit is a training and self-learning manual on diversity, compiled by journalists for journalists. It has been developed under the auspices of the EBU’s Intercultural and Diversity Group. The mastercourse aims to make TV journalists aware of the effects of cultural biases and a lack of information on the different groups in society.

The Toolkit compiles practical information and advice that can be applied and learned from. It includes a DVD with over 30 extracts from news and current affairs programmes from a dozen European countries illustrating some of the difficulties journalists face when they report on minorities. Working with the toolkit can help in bringing more diversity into the newsroom and on screen. It can also stimulate the process of finding new ways of storytelling and a new audience.

The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) is a cooperation partner for this Mastercourse(http://fra.europa.eu).
