  Biography of Edwin Brys

As a boy of eleven, I had to give a lecture for my classmates. The favourite items were volcanos, zeppelins, Elvis, or the secret life of sharks. My theme was the magnificent ocean steamer shaped building of our national broadcasting company. From that age on, radio became my passion.

After studying philology, science of communication and years of trying to master the violin, I joined the crew of the ocean steamer. First as a news journalist, but soon as a producer of current affairs, magazines, fiction and radio documentary. It is only in the early nineties, I got on board of the cruiser of the International Feature Conference, under the inspiring guidance of captain Peter Leonhard Braun. Since then, radio features became my daily job and the ideal genre to look to the world, and to give a voice to people, to their stories, their hopes, their struggles between dream and reality. And the medium radio itself drove and forced me to explore the stylistics, the grammar, the expressive and magic power of radio. For sure, contacts with the international community of feature makers helped me a lot.

At VRT, we started up a weekly radio doc Magazine, called "Piazza". And we got quite a lot of national and international prizes. This is always good for the team spirit and for the position of your department within the station.

"Everyday something disappears", a fragile and sometimes funny portrait of a home for old, senile people, or at the same time awards at the Prix Europa, Prix Italia and Premios Ondas. Nowadays, I'm training radio people at my station, inherited Leo's captain cap at the IFC, and was asked by Nathalie Labourdette to point out a navigation route for the young sailors of the EBU Master School for Radio Documentary. As you will hear on this CD- Rom, no one shipwrecked, and many sailed much further than to the harbour.
