From the chairman:

Summer is here and also approaching is our EBU Ars Acustica Specialized Meeting which will be held in Brussels 19-21 June on kind invitation from our dear colleague Mr André Defossez and his friends at RTBF. I'm really looking forward in meeting you all again for some fruitful discussions around issues concering ars acustica in the world of public broadcasting and to further develop collaborations within the EBU. I'm also very happy that we will be able to have our dear friend Mr Hans-Burkhard Schlichting with us again at our meeting since he has always been a most valuable and dear colleague to all of us in the world of ars acustica. I would also like to send all my congratulations and best wishes to our dear friend Mr Goetz Naleppa from DeutschlandRadio Kultur who has receiced the Gold Award from The New York Festivals for his brilliant sound-composition Popol Vuh. Unfortunately, Mr Naleppa will not be able to join us in Brussels since he will be at the Award Gala in New York but we all congratulate him to this fantastic award! See you all in Brussels for a great meeting and maybe we also have some time during the evenings to join the rest of Europe viewing some football-matches in the Euro 2008!

Information regarding The Karl-Sczuka-Prize 2008:

The Karl-Sczuka-Prize for works of radio art is awarded annually by Suedwestrundfunk (SWR), the ARD-member organisation in the Southwest of Germany. It will be awarded in 2008 the for the 47th time. According to the regulations, it is awarded for ?the best production of a work of radio art using musical material and structures in an acoustic performance?. The prize winning work is chosen by an independent five-member jury comprised of experts and critics, who are not employees of a radio organisation:

Klaus Ramm (chairman), Marcel Beyer, Monika Lichtenfeld, Johann-Georg
Schaarschmidt and Christina Weiss.

The Karl-Sczuka-Prize amounts to 12,500 Euro. In addition to the prize itself the jury can award a support grant of 5,000 Euro to an applicant for the Karl Sczuka Prize.

The price is offered publicly and is open not only to radio organisations. It is open to the public: authors, composers, producers and production teams (hereinafter referred to as originators) are all eligible and welcome to submit their applications if they accord with the regulations.
Works already entered are not eligible again in subsequent years. An originator’s
work may be submitted on his or her behalf by the producing company (for
instance, a radio organisation). Also in this case it has to be accompanied
by a declaration by the originator (see below).

There is no limitation as to length, and even short pieces of radio art are
accepted if they comply with the prize criteria for “works” quoted above.
In case the work has already been aired or published in other media, e.g.
on CD, the date of the first broadcast or publication must not be earlier
than June 1 of 2007. Even unbroadcasted productions are welcome and
also productions in usual multichannel formats like 5.1 or Dolby Surround.
Till the present moment only multi-optional media like CD-ROM or websides
are excluded from the Sczuka competition.

The recording of the production (DAT-cassette, CD, DVD, audiocassette
or broadcasting tape) should be accompanied by:

a) a declaration by the originator that he or she is presenting the
work for the Sczuka Prize and that he or she holds all rights exclusively;

b) otherwise, a written agreement of all persons who have participated
in producing the work, or the agreement of the producer, if it is he or
she who holds the rights to the work;

c) a manuscript or, if this is unavailable, a synopsis (six copies);

d) a short biography and a list of all works of the originator (six copies);

e) details of the place and date of production and if applicable, the date
of its first radio broadcast or publication. The date of the first broadcast or publication of the work must not be earlier than June 1st of the preceding year.

Applicants are asked to submit their productions by June 15 2008
(arrival at Baden-Baden) in a copy ready for radio broadcast along with the other
requested material to:
