Radio News and Sport

Radio News,  Sport & New Media  is active in the areas of news operations, sport rights negotiations, conference production, digital media groups, co-productions and the facilitation of content-sharing amongst Members.

Keeping Members informed about major international sport and news operations is a key objective. Every year, we distribute information on over 100 sports competitions and around 50 news events.

Groups

The rapidly-changing media environment demands enhanced cooperation on crucial issues related to ethics, rights and technology. We foster collaboration through the News Group, the Sports Group, the International Broadcasting Group and the New Radio Group

Radio News & Sport participates in a number of the EBU's interdisciplinary groups and meetings, working together with the EBU Legal, Technical, TV and Operations Departments. Areas covered include radio sport rights acquisition, traffic and travel information, archiving, digital rights management, distribution technologies and international relations.

Operations

The Unit is present at major  news events to act as a go-between for radio broadcasters and organisers. We also liaise with major international organisations, European bodies and telecommunications providers, in order to ensure that event organisers meet the specific needs of radio.

We take our own specialist equipment to news operations, where we also set up studios, feed points and workspaces .  We distribute pool signals and as a back-up service are able to provide analogue or digital copies of the recordings. As a commitment to Members, we are constantly renewing our equipment in order to offer cutting-edge facilities on site.

Examples of operations managed by the Unit include G8 and NATO summits, EU Councils, WEF, WSIS, etc. Bookings of our services and facilities can be made on line.

Euroradio News

Members also enjoy the benefits of a web-based platform for exchanging audio material. We have developed the Euroradio News platform together with the EBU IT Department in order to give members  access to original audio files for use in their radio programmes. Euroradio News is fed from different sources:

• files provided by the EBU during news operations;
• content from the various European and international organizations involved in the project such as EBS, NATO, UN, etc.
• material provided by Members.

To date, more than 80 organisations have used this platform.
