New Radio Group

The New Radio Group (NRG) is a forum for elected experts from member organisations to discuss the management of Radio as a digital industry and medium. The purpose of the group is to develop insights as to how new formats, technologies and distribution concepts may or should determine the future of Radio; both as a public service and a source of revenues.

The NRG is not a technical group, it is content led but also includes strategic and financial issues in its discussions. The group seeks to establish best practice and to study innovation in the migration of radio to a more diverse, multi-platform future.

Above all, the NRG looks to connect, to create new relationships and understandings - the skills of content making with those of technology; the business of distribution with the behaviour of the audience; the public broadcaster with their private equivalent.

In the EBU, the group acts as a bridge with related groups in the Technical and TV departments and maintains a close relationship with the Legal & Public Affairs Dept and SIS.
The NRG reports to the Radio Committee and has the following objectives:

Insight:

To advise the Radio Committee and members on key themes and trends likely to have material impact on production, audiences and distribution over a 3 to 5 year timeframe.

To collect, publish and exchange information about innovation in programme formats and delivery of strategic significance.

Partnership

To organize an annual Digital Radio Conference for EBU managers and producers interested in digital media and development. This event is cross-industry, involving commercial broadcasters and stakeholders from across the sector.

To advance partnerships with key stakeholders, including private broadcasters and the automotive industry.

Advocacy & Innovation

To champion switch-over policies at European level and where possible to support public campaigns that make the case for digital radio.
To build a network of Radio New Media managers to support and influence the work of the group.

As required, to develop new ways of co-production and programme exchange within the EBU Radio community.
