COPEAM
Alessandra Paradisi, Secretary General of COPEAM

Here we are at last.

In a few days time, the curtain will lift on the Palermo Conference. Two hundred and fifty professionals from the entire region will exchange cooperation projects, initiatives and ideas.

Though the year has been charged with conferences and meetings, this event has always generated great excitement and anticipation.

Heritage

Ten years ago, in Cairo, the COPEAM founders signed the Association’s by-laws, anticipating a new political and social phase in the Euro-Mediterranean Region. Things did not exactly turn out as expected, many hopes were shattered, a lot of ideas were not pursued as envisaged. However, COPEAM does exist, with its unique heritage and experience in the light of which the Palermo conference assumes particular importance.

Nothing has happened by chance: we have been sustained by our passion and rationality. Palermo is not a final destination, but a port of departure to new horizons.

The title chosen for the Conference points to our new direction: going forward to return to our fundamental roots.

Palermo, the paradigm of our Mediterranean heritage. Never exactly what it appears. Blue-eyed girls escorted by dark, curly-haired boys, a metaphor of historical complexity, with all the charm of its unyielding contrasts.

I am proud of my Sicilian background. The history of my family, like that of many Italian families, is characterized by the mingling of different populations forced to migrate – permanently or temporarily – by wars or job seeking.

What I have learnt and continue to learn are the teachings of stories of separation and reunions, traumatic phenomena that nonetheless led to genetic and cultural contamination.

According to our experience, such contamination has already existed for some years. Today’s revolution in communications will help us find new solutions to old problems: to grow together and share know-how, regardless of distances.

We wish to share our experience to go beyond the limits of scepticism and nihilism, in 2010. Too expensive? Just imagine the cost of “non-Mediterraneanism”.

The boat is about to raise anchor, all aboard! The future starts today.
