An independent government report has praised the BBC's digital
radio services and said the corporation had gone "well beyond" what
was expected of it when it launched five new DAB stations last
year.
"The scope and ambition of BBC's digital radio services
have evolved well beyond what was initially envisaged when they
were granted approval. This is a considerable achievement that has
been instrumental in promoting the uptake of digital
radio," said Tim Gardam, a former BBC and Channel 4
executive, who was commissioned to probe the BBC digital radio
services.
Mr Gardam also said that the BBC's archive of radio recordings,
which go back at least as far as the 1960s, should be made
available to to commercial buyers.
