Evaluating picture quality

About 200 students recently participated in testing a new psycho-physical method for subjective HDTV image quality assessment (see picture right). The research project is being carried out by the University of Applied Sciences in Wiesbaden and the EBU Technical Department (project leadership: Technical Department).

The method allows a direct comparison of different  formats including HDTV and SDTV. The results so far confirm the clear benefit of progressive scanning HDTV formats for production and emission, and this will be valuable guidance for EBU members.  The methodology itself should make a significant contribution to television science.
