Audiovisual Media Services Directive

The European Parliament adopted its opinion on the proposed new Audiovisual Media Services Directive on Wednesday 13 December.

The EBU welcomes the extension of the scope of the Television Without Frontiers Directive. The new Directive should serve current and future developments in audiovisual media services, taking account of today's reality, where audiovisual services are delivered in many different ways. Audience expect services anytime, anyplace and anywhere. Many EBU members already offer services on different platforms, which meet the demands of European audiences.

Jean Réveillon, EBU Secretary-General, commenting on the vote said, "the European Parliament has given a strong signal that introducing common minimum rules for all audiovisual media services in the new media environment is essential. The new directive will ensure that whenever consumers access publicly available audiovisual content they can be confident that a certain level of protection of public interest objectives exists."
