Milosevic on Trial wins EBU Golden Link Award
Geneva / La Rochelle, 25 June 2007 - Milosevic on Trial wins this year's edition of the EBU Golden Link Award. The winner was announced today by Mr Jean Réveillon, Secretary General of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and Chairman of the Jury, at the opening dinner of the Sunny Side of the Doc Film Festival in La Rochelle (FR).
Milosevic on Trial, a film by Michael Christoffersen, is the first documentary to go behind the scenes at the Hague and follow the historic trial of the former Yugoslav leader for crimes against humanity.
The prize went to TV2 Denmark who initiated and developed the winning project. The film was co-produced by a further eight European channels (BBC, NRK Norway, RTBF, SVT Sweden, TSR, VPRO-Television, YLE TV2 Documentaries and ZDF Arte) and the Canadian broadcaster SBS.
"The surprising thing about this documentary is that it keeps you 'glued' to the screen even if it is entirely based on court room proceedings and discussions between lawyers. The director made an effective story out of modest material, providing unique insight into the biggest war crimes trial since Nuremberg." commented Jean Réveillon.
The EBU Golden Link Award was created five years ago to celebrate the best documentary developed through the two annual EBU Documentary Group meetings and co-produced by two or more EBU member broadcasters. A jury of five, plus the Chairman, selects the winning film and the leading co-production partner is awarded a bronze sculpture by M.C. Escher.
This year's jury members are: Yves Jeanneau, Director of the Sunny Side of the Doc Film Festival, Gaspard Lamunière , commissioning editor of TSR, Erik Gandini, a well-known Swedish filmmaker, Marijke Rawie, former commissioning editor from the Netherlands and now consultant, Fiona Stourton, former commissioning editor from the BBC and now editorial manager of Ten Alps Broadcast.
In 2006 the Award went to Exit, the right to die (TSR).
