Bucharest: Euroradio City of Music

22-28 January 2007

In 1999, when the European Broadcasting Union decided to ask several European cities to introduce themselves to the world through their live music, Bucharest was the capital of a country not yet a Member of the European Union. For radio channel directors, however, there was no doubt that Bucharest had to be on the list.

Even during its most difficult recent years, when Romanian musicians were rarely touring abroad, Bucharest was always seen, not only from Oslo to Athens, from Lisbon to Vienna, but also in North America and in Asian-Pacific countries, as a centre of European cultures, as a bridge between tradition and modernity as well as a reference for the highest standard of professionalism among its musicians.

Therefore, we are extremely proud to make the Euroradio satellite network available to the magnificent series of concerts organized by Romanian Radio to show the diversity of music in Bucharest. Every day between 22 and 28 January 2007, 2.4 million listeners from throughout the world will visit, thanks to the magic of radio, famous venues like the Romanian Atheneum Concert Hall, Cotroceni Museum's Cerchez Hall, Mihail Jora Concert Hall of Romanian Radio and the Romanian Orthodox Patriarchate Palace Hall (see images right from top to bottom), to name but a few.

These international listeners, from New Zealand to Canada, from Iceland to Russia, will be entertained by the variety of music in Bucharest, from symphonic to chamber music, from jazz to opera, from sacred to secular vocal music, but will also share in and understand the true values of a nation deeply rooted in its musical tradition.

In anticipation of all the great moments that we will spend together, on behalf of all public radio broadcasters and music-lovers, we wish to thank Romanian Radio for such an appealing offer.

Long live radio, long live music!
