EBU satisfied with EP vote on Telecom Reform

Geneva, 8 July 2008 - The EBU* welcomes the European Parliament's clear stance on the telecom package, which will help ensure the dynamic development of broadcasting.

The vote of the Industry Committee confirmed the balanced approach by its rapporteur Catherine Trautmann, and reflects the important role of spectrum management for media and audiovisual policies. The positive outcome is the result of constructive cooperation between Ms Trautmann, and the rapporteurs of the advising committees.

Jean Réveillon, EBU Director General, said "the Members of the EBU contribute to the development of digital broadcasting and drive the digital switchover. Yesterday's decision confirms that European broadcasters are expected to deliver their services over all platforms, including digital terrestrial, which is key for free-to-air viewing".

The parallel vote of the Internal Market Committee confirmed the Parliament's commitment to a future-oriented audiovisual policy, by giving the Member States the opportunity to extend their must-carry rules to all audiovisual media services, in line with the Audiovisual Media Services Directive.
