Eurovision at the German federal elections

The 17th German federal election took place on September 27, 2009 to elect the members of the Bundestag, the federal parliament of Germany. The federal election was  the final and most important election in what is called a Superwahljahr (super election year) in Germany.

Exit polls showed that the Christian Democrats and the Free Democrats won the election, and they announced their intention to form a new centre-right government with Angela Merkel as chancellor, while their main opponent, Frank-Walter Steinmeier and the Social Democrats conceded defeat.

Eurovision Special Events set up production and transmission facilities in the Paul-Löbe Haus (home to the MPs’ offices) across the street from the Reichstag and the main parties’ headquarters (see picture below). The EBU also set up an IBC (International Broadcast Centre) where broadcasters had their own workspaces equipped with the usual telecommunications facilities.

Live stand-up positions were available overlooking the Reichstag from all the main parties’ headquarters at the CDU, SPD and FDP.
