The 54th Ordinary EBU General Assembly took place in Stockholm on 4 and 5 July 2003 on the invitation of Sveriges Radio (SR), Sveriges Television (SVT) and Sveriges Utbildningsradio (UR).

In addition to the report of the Administrative Council, the Secretary General, Directors and Committee Chairmen made a series of collaborative presentations bringing together the reports.

The 22nd extraordinary General Assembly

The 22nd extraordinary General Assembly was held on 4 July 2003 to adopt a revised edition of the statutes.

Dossiers

The Assembly examined a number of dossiers, among them:

  • plans for the 2004 European Football Championship;
  • the merger of the EBU and OIRT 10 years on;
  • membership issues;
  • finance.

Digital focus

As stressed by EBU President Arne Wessberg, “the meeting will have a strong focus on Europe’s digital development”  as the Swedish capital “has long been, and remains, on the frontline of digital progress.”

Digital developments were at the centre of a professional discussion with presentations on:

  • the revision of the Stockholm frequency plan;
  • the situation in Sweden (contributions from SVT, SR, UR);
  • BBC and digital (BBCi, Freeview, free-to-air by satellite, DAB);
  • developing content for multiple platforms in Finland;
  • digital in North America.

Regional meetings

Nordic Members, Mediterranean Members and Central/Eastern European Members also held distinct meetings on the fringes of the General Assembly.

The World Broadcasting Unions met on 7 July.
