Death of Roberto Marinho

Following the passing away of Roberto Marinho, founder and owner of the GLOBO group, Secretary General of the EBU, Jean Stock, sent his condolences to Luiz Henrique Rabello, news director of TV Globo.

"I was very sad to hear about the death of Roberto Marinho.

Would you be so kind as to act as an interpreter and convey the content of my message to the staff of TV Globo Ltd, which was an associate Member of the EBU.

During these difficult times I would like to express my deepest sympathy to all those who knew Roberto Marinho and who worked closely with him.

Already a journalist at the age of 20 when O Globo was founded by his father Irineu Marinho, a remarkable journalist himself, Roberto Marinho took the helm following his father's death. He went on to create what is today the largest and most important communication system in Latin America.

Robert Marinho showed a passionate interest in all areas of life: economics, politics, education, the arts, entertainment and sports; he personally managed his immense communications complex until his death.

Roberto Marinho was one of the most important figures in Brazil's media history during the second half of the twentieth century; he will not be forgotten on this side of the Atlantic."
