ARD, ZDF renew satellite contracts

German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF have signed contracts with Luxembourg-based SES ASTRA, enabling them to ensure the nationwide, ubiquitous switch-over from analogue to digital satellite transmissions.

"The agreements therefore reflect the German Federal Government's media policy target of discontinuing analogue TV distribution by 2010, if market conditions allow," according to SES ASTRA's press release.

Some 14 million German households are currently equipped for ASTRA direct-to-home reception.
