Digital radio: DRM, DAB back common receivers

A day after the opening of the 2003 IFA, Berlin's international exhibition of home media electronics, the collective organizations of DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale) and WorldDAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) - which are both supported by the EBU - announced an agreement to back digital radios for the European public which can handle both systems.

A packed press conference heard the presidents of the two organizations - Peter Senger for DRM and Annika Nyberg for WorldDAB - explain why DRM+DAB radios are on the way.

World DAB Forum President - and executive from EBU Member YLE - Annika Nyberg, explained that the move was inevitable: "manufacturers would do this whether we agreed or not - because it is what the consumers will ask for"

Industry experts reckoned the first combined DAB/DRM receivers will costs 500-600 euros in the shops, but prices will fall with volume production.
