World Athletics Championship

Taking account of the time difference between the continents, European channels screened more pictures and broadcasts from the 2001 World Athletics Championship in Edmonton (Canada) than from the two previous events (Seville in 1999 and Athens in 1997).

About 60 hours of programming from Edmonton was broadcast on the major European channels: 62 hours on France2/France3, 61 hours on RAI 2 and RAI 3, 59 hours on TVE1 and La2 and on BBC1 and BBC2, and 56 hours on ARD and ZDF.

On the whole TV coverage by the major European channels (excluding Eurosport) of the Seville event in 1999 was lower than for Athens in 1997: almost 50 hours (Seville) on RAI in Italy compared to 60 hours (Athens), about 40 hours of programmes for the various events  in Seville on France Télévisions, ARD and ZDF in Germany and on BBC in the United Kingdom compared to 50 hours for Athens.

The only exception was Spain, the host country, where the RTVE group offered almost 65 hours of coverage for Seville compared to 60 hours for Athens in 1997.

Although channels provided greater coverage of Edmonton in 2001 the time difference between Canada and Europe made it impossible for the event to reach the high audience ratings achieved in Seville in 1999.

Average audience in millions of viewers (Seville 1999 / Edmonton 2001)

Germany: ARD + ZDF: 2,3 / 0,9
Spain: TVE1 + La2: 1,4 / 0,4
France: France 2 + France 3: 2,7 / 0,7
Italy : RAI 2 + RAI 3: 1,8 / 0,6
United Kingdom: BBC1 + BBC2 : 3,5 / 1,6
