EBU Eurosonic/Youth Programming Conference

The EBU Eurosonic/Youth Programming Conference is taking place in Stockholm on 8 and 9 May 2003.

Participants will exchange ideas and discuss various music formats, station profiles, as well as opportunities offered by digital radio.

  AGENDA
  Thursday 8 May
Rewind selecta! Music formats
 -CHR (Contemporary Hit Radio): CHR-pop, CHR-dance, CHR-90's, CHR-Alternative;
-AC (Adult Contemporary): Hot-AC, Modern-AC, Alternative, Urban...

All these abbreviations might sound like jargon but music formats constitute a crucial piece of the radio programming puzzle. Some EBU Youth Programming stations have gone for the full CHR format, while others have decided to go for a "niche" format or multiple and diverse genres evolving during the schedule.

What makes the "Youth Programming public broadcaster" special? Are there any differences between "CHR/EBU stations" and "CHR/private stations"? If so, what are they?

Presentations/case studies by: Cadena SER (Spain), Radio France Le Mouv' (France), NRK (Norway). Fritz Radio (Germany).

Radio Trotsky or the permanent revolution...
...or the need to reinvent itself, to adapt to an increasing competitive environment.

Some EBU stations have gone, and are still going, through a period of major change. Cost-saving needs, internal and external audits, audience research tools (use of focus groups, listening panels), have led Management to decide on a partial or sometimes total re-branding and re-vamping of their station.

What is the decision-making process behind this kind of shake-up? What were/are the expected results?

Presentations/case studies by: RadioMafia/YLEX (Finland), Studio Brussel, VRT (Belgium), DRP3 (Denmark), CNRS/ CLERSE-IFRESI (France).

  Friday 9 May
Go! Digital
DAB does not necessarily stand for "dead and buried". EBU Members are seizing new opportunities by launching new digital platforms and providing new specially "niche formatted" programmes on the Net and/or on DAB. At the same time, websites allow stations to offer "more" and also complement traditional broadcasting. From airwaves to DAB/web stations, broadcasters have already implemented what can be described as a giant step forward.

Presentations/cases studies by: SRP3 (Sweden), ARD/Sputnik (Germany), BBC, GWR, British DAB (UK).

 "Open Mike"
Session where ideas and initiatives that have led to "success stories" and original programming in stations are to be presented.
