The Radio Day of European Cultures, a pan-European initiative,
will take place on 12 October 2003, with participating public radio
broadcasters devoting part or all of their output to cultural
subjects in a European context. This provides a unique chance for
all European broadcasters to make a major contribution to the
cultural integration of the enlarging continent and to demonstrate
the great potential of radio to cross borders.
In April 2003, at the EBU Radio Assembly, delegates from 54
public broadcasting organizations supported the idea to organize a
Radio Day of European Cultures. The Council of Europe, European
Cultural Foundation and European Parliament have joined as
co-organizers. The event is under the personal patronage of Pat
Cox, President of the European Parliament, as well as the auspices
of Walter Schwimmer, Secretary General of the Council of Europe,
and the patronage of Viviane Reding, Member of the European
Commission responsible for Education and Culture. Operational
management lies with Prix Europa, Berlin.
On 12 October 2003, people in 45 European countries will be able to
listen to and feel part of continental Europe. As radio is an
ideal medium for broadcasting culture, the Radio Day will be a
valuable instrument for promoting European integration.
Participating radio stations are invited to develop their own
concept: interviews, concerts, hearings, discussions, cross-border
transmissions, Vox Pops, readings, quiz shows, competitions, chats
or features. Furthermore, the EBU will offer four programmes.
Finally, an exchange of programme ideas or potential coproductions
will be coordinated by the Radio Day operations management.
