Word of a major explosion reaches your newsroom.
Your first reaction is to scramble crews
and producers to get to the site.
However, shortly after you start receiving
unconfirmed news that staff from the International Atomic Energy
Agency and the city's “Hazardous Materials” emergency unit are also
rushing to the scene.
The wires are now reporting that the
government is asking everyone in a 10km radius to evacuate and that
the press will not be granted access to the scene.
The doomsday scenario has happened - the
bomb was radioactive.
Will your newsroom be able to cope with this
scenario? This exercise was the theme of the first
session of the News Xchange conference which took place in
Ljubljana in October 2002.
A first-rate international panel of news
managers, journalists, cameramen and safety experts discussed all
the issues that would arise from this nightmare scenario.
The debate was made even more realistic
thanks to live satellite link-ups from the site of the explosion
and from other strategic places.
