Georges Pashalidis, minister for Macedonia-Thrace, opened the 114th meeting of the EBU's Administrative Council. Christos Protopapas, minister for press and mass media, who was unavoidably detained in Athens, asked Angelos Stangos, director general of ERT, to convey his warmest wishes to the delegates.

Both men underlined the importance of public service broadcasting, especially in keeping citizens informed during difficult times like those experienced recently.

They welcomed everybody to Thessaloniki, the city where the future of Europe will be decided at the next summit of the leaders of European Union countries, including the 10 prospective members.

The first part of the working session was devoted to the reports of President Arne Wessberg, the EBU's committees and assemblies.

ROR and TVR (Romania), BBC (UK), RTP (Portugal), NRK (Norway) and ERT (Greece) gave an overview of recent broadcasting developments in their respective countries.
