The Norwegian Broadcasting Council

On 11 June 2003, the 21 representatives of the NBC were welcomed by Jean Stock, Secretary General of the EBU.

The presentations of the EBU activities were made by:

  • Jacques Briquemont, Head of Public Affairs. 
    EBU organization and tasks; competitive environment of the television market. 
  • Werner Rumphorst, Director of the Legal and Public Affairs Department. 
    Development of the regulatory framework in the EU; attempts to limit the scope of PSBs;transparency of financing different activities; definition of the public service, etc.
  • Stefan Kürten, Director of Eurovision Operations. 
    Struggle to acquire rights to content, especially sports;  activities of the EBU in the field during major events, e.g. Afghanistan, presenting the news exchange, etc.
  • Raina Konstantinova, Director of Radio Department. 
    Exchange of cultural programmes and music
  • Bjørn Erichsen, Director of Television Department
    Ambitions for coproduction of TV programmes;  increase in transmitting live events;  format developments.
  • Phil Laven, Technical Director. 
    On MHP and the importance of having an open API - efforts by the EBU.   

The Norwegian Broadcasting Council

The Broadcasting Council discusses and expresses its opinion on the general programme policy of the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation Ltd. Its expresses its opinion on programme matters submitted to it by the Director General, or on other programme matters as the Council sees fit.

The Board of Governors and the Director General may invite the Council to give its opinion on administrative and financial matters.

The King may issue instructions to the Broadcasting Council.

The Broadcasting Council comprises 14 members, each with their own deputy. The Storting (Parliament) appoints eight members, one of whom shall be the Director of the Sami Programme Council (currently Nancy C. Porsanger).

The members are appointed for a four-year term. A member can be reappointed but only for one term.
