France 3

9 million viewers for a documentary

Tuesday 7 January 2003, the documentary L'Odyssée de l'espèce ("Man's Odyssey") pulled in 8,745,000 viewers (16.5 audience points) and more than one-third of viewers (35.2% of audience share), placing France 3 well ahead of all other channels.

Not only was it a record for a documentary on France 3 but it also had the highest audience rating for early evening viewing since the 1998 World Cup.

L'Odyssée de l'espèce had the highest audience share across all age groups: children (33.3% for the 4–10-year-olds), youth (27.5% for the 15–34-year-olds), adults (34.3% for the 35–59-year-olds) and 39.5% of audience for the over 30s.

France 3 congratulates itself on its record-breaking achievement for a documentary that explores our origins going back 8 million years. This is the first major international coproduction that has been undertaken by France 3 in collaboration with Transparences Productions, 17 Juin Production, Mac Guff Ligne, Pixcom, and with SRC, Discovery Channel Canada, Channel 4, RAI, ZDF, TSR, Planète, France 5. The documentary is based on an original idea of Hervé Dresen and has been produced by Jacques Malaterre with the support of a science consultant Yves Coppens.
