WORLD MUSIC AWARDS 2003

The simultaneous broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and the EBU satellite of the World Music Awards 2003 ceremony at the Ocean in London will take place on Thursday, 27 March 2003. 

Awards

Americas Award:  Los de Abajo (Mexico) Fiery rock, soul, ska and radical Mexican soul.

Boundary Crossing Award:  Ellika and Solo (Sweden/Senegal) Ellika on fiddle and Solo on kora merge Swedish traditions with ancient griot melodies.

Middle East Award:  Samira Said (Egypt) One of the top stars of the Arabic music world.

Newcomer Award:  Gotan Project (France) A fresh approach to tango.

Europe Award:  Mariza (Portugal) A unique young performer of fado, the Portuguese blues.

Asia-Pacific Award:   Ensemble Kaboul and Ustad Mahwash (Afghanistan), traditional songs from Afghanistan.

Africa Award and Critics’ Award for Album of the Year:   Orchestra Baobab (Senegal)
A double award-winning ensemble, now re-formed after a break of two decades.
