  Breaking News / Crisis Management workshop

Two one-day workshops, one for journalists and one for managers have been held at TVP, Warsaw, Poland, on 12 and 13 December 2006.

Focus on:

  • discussion, examples, and interactive drama with observation, critique, and conclusions. 

Objective: 

  • to give TVP managers and journalists’ methods and techniques for covering crisis situations and breaking news.

The workshop was conducted by Eric May, trainer and product manager for the development and operation of EBU International Training programmes. 
What participants said:   

Journalists:
– "The most valuable thing was putting in order to our knowledge."

– "Team role play exercises allow me to evaluate the situation from a distance and teach me how to talk to eye-witness and other people involved in crisis situations."

Managers:
– "The most valuable was the simulation game. Interactive manner of work which allors an involvement of all the participants."

– "I got a Breaking news proper analysis. The workshop showed the practical solutions and brought structured answers to our weaknesses."

CONTENT 

Module 1: Group discussion: Halemba Mine explosion
Objective: To identify patterns in coverage of breaking news as TVP

Module 2: Interactive Drama  
Objective: To put principles identified in Module One into practice; identify skills to cover breaking news and work effectively in teams.
 

 

Module 3: Discussion of results   

Objective: To identify what methods work in coverage of breaking news, and how teams work together effectively.

 

Module 4: What did we learn / Matrix and toolkit 

Objective: To summarize the entire day and what was learned; to hand out standards for covering breaking news and crisis situations.
