Janine Bennetts, journalist at "The Press", reports on HEST course

Janine Bennetts is a New Zealand newspaper journalist currently working in Ireland. She undertook research on safety training for the media as part of a post-graduate scholarship from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand.

She wrote a comprehensive reporton “Protecting Our Journalists: Issues of Safety and Traumatic Stress in the Media”.

Her investigations were carried out with an international outlook. Her research was enhanced by her participation in several safety courses for journalists working in dangerous situations.

She participated in our HEST course in September 2007.

It was invaluable to my research and a fantastic experience”, Janine said.

Here is an abstract from her report:

“..the EBU Objective programme gave participants a realistic overview of the challenges and threats they will face in reporting from dangerous zones. The exercises highlighted the importance of preparation and awareness and gave participants an invaluable insight into both the situations they may encounter, and their reactions in these situations.

The media focus of the course – having an experienced journalist as a trainer and being required to actually report and produce news from the simulated environments – put the training into context for the participants. This dimension was not just an extra challenge but an essential reminder that the purpose of the training is not just to learn how to survive these situations, but to work successfully in them at the same time. …”

She kindly agrees to let us publish her report on our web site for which we sincerely thank her.
