HEST- Hostile Environment Safety Training

Hexenagger Schloss, Munich, Germany
16-19 September 2008

An intensive course to allow journalists and cameramen:

  • to identify their strengths and weaknesses and enable them to better assess the risks;
  • to acquire essential tools to handle stress, safety and avoid danger to operate under extreme conditions;
  • to exchange experiences in a stimulating environment.

Format and teaching methods:

  • 4-day training
  • practical training including "play-outs" in reconstructed urban and rural settings,
  • group as well as personal debriefing sessions completing the the role plays.
  • presentations, ad-hoc lectures

As part of the training, participants are also asked to film, or record, edit and feed stories.

What the participants said about:

OVERALL EVALUATION

  • "I   think I never learned that much in only four days. A lot of helpful information that will not be forgotten - and that is due to the highly impressive practical exercises. very realistic, very well conceived!"
  • "Very good course. A lot of extremely important knowledge in a very professional and efficient manner."
  • "Very good balance of pointing out serious dangers, stressing importance and fun elements."

DAY BY DAY EVALUATION

DAY 1 – FOUNDATION

  • "I would have prefered to get a few more papers (like on the rest of the day) because the sheets we got were superb."
  • "Grant is the best medical teacher I have ever seen, very funny. I have enjoyed it so much and learned so much at the same time."
  • " Very good presentation, much to do and much to consider. Never boring"
  • "I really appreciated the "hands-on" medical exercises. The other modules this day are more theoretical. I would like to see the weapons and balistics awareness module for real, obviously that would be kind of difficult in the surroundings."
  • ":Lecture more standard form but an interesting way of teaching."

DAY 2  – URBAN

  • "The "edit & debrief" exercise was nice but not necessary to me; the danger during the riots was "limited"; the people in the village were more upste at the beginning than at the end (except for the part at the end when 10 of them were at my car trying to drag me out of it)"
  • " A super day! Again!"
  • "In the morning, mostly in 2 civil distrubance", too much slides, should be more baseed on experience & questions of course participants."
  • "...Also I appreciated the urban practical: convincing enough to "believe". The edit & debrief enabled everybody to compare different approaches: great learning experience."
  • " Lots of things, but for me, the most important was to repeat the first aid and to get to know more about the work in riots. Was very good to experience the village situation & negotiation, checkpoints, riots and all the other dangerous moments. Was good to see mistakes and to discuss about them I think it was very good to have debrief on the spot, immediately after the practice."
  • "It was great to be able to work on a final product. The villagers were convincingly scary! A bit more focus on how to talk to customs or other officials might be good."

DAY 3  – RURAL

  • ".. for me the best & most interesting module on the whole training."
  • "No need to emphasize the success of rural exercise: it taught me a lot about group dynamics, communication under pressure and diplomacy in evaluation. Best of the week by far."
  • "Very tough and very productive day. Very realistic moments. For me was really good to experience how it is to work in the group (not always as easy as I expected) Maybe afterwards we had to try to make our stories, because it would be interesting to find out what can we get out from such situation as a journalist. I felt that was more psychological training than practical."
  • ":We learn more about communications between each other. Now I know that in the future I will choose people with whom I am going to work."

DAY 4  – CONFIRMATION

  • "... ran out of time towards the end, but to me navigation and military-media interface were very useful."
  • " I am completely satisfied. I think that course might last longer, one or two days."

COMMENTS ON THE TRAINERS

  • "Sorry, can't say anything critical. I have learnt a lot; all the arguments were clear."
  • "If you ever take out Grant of the course, I will not recommend the course to anyone !!!"
  • " Very professional, credible and very polite. I learned a lot."
  • " All the trainers are excellent: very competent in their disciplines; very sociable and communicative; Grant & Robert deserve a special mention because of their passionate approach."
  • "Very experienced, clever and attractive: the best I ever met. Very skilled to organize a group work and let everyboday speak out. It is always better to hear (???) from the people of have experienced this themselves."
  • " It must be incredibly hard, and it is not due to a lack of efforts, but at times more patience is needed when people say "silly" things."
  • " They all are grat teachers, their teaching in such interesting way, especially grant Wootton, with lots of energy."
