The 14 young producers selected last December for the 4th EBU Master School on Radio Features met for the first time from 9 to 12 March 2008 for a five day Master course in Berlin at RBB with the contribution of ten speakers.

They reviewed the main skills and competencies that are needed to make a feature: dramaturgy, storytelling, music, interview, recordings.

EBU School of Talents

The EBU Master School on Radio Features wishes to generate new talents for radio. This is why we have renamed it as the "EBU School of Talents."

Radio has to re-invent new formats, new genres thanks to innovation and creative ideas.

What we aim to achieve with the Master school is not to perpetuate the old-style, elite feature that nobody listens to but to offer EBU Members a new generation of talents who will be able to connect with the audience. We will teach them key skills that they will be able to push to their limits.

What participants said about

– "These days have been a reminder of why I did choose this field. The lust for it. It's been an inspiration, a wake up call. Like the world is big again. It's smelly, sunny, difficult, touching. .(...) Stop, re-think and fuel yourself with stories, sound scapes & discussions. And of course to be a part of a passionate group & to see the sparkling eyes of the coaches and their skills."

– "Inspiring international community; very professional coaches with different focuses and backgrounds."

–"Creating images: it is most wonderful thing I have heard while working on a radio; using excerpts of pieces is also very good, the examples are necessary."

– "The course re-energised me and gave me many new creative thoughts. Also I learnt new techniques, especially in interviewing."

– Explaining feature circle: tension, focus etc. was most valuable as well as the structure of the feature; individual coaching. It gave me a basic confidence for creating story with "head and tail" from beginning to the end."

– "The coaches are really friendly, charming, skilled and know what they are talking about; they brought great examples of features; they inspire me and make me to want working even more in the field of radio features.

– "The coaches were very supportive and treated us in a mature and non-patronizing way."
