Operations

En anglais uniquement

The EBU Radio News, Sport and New Media Section has extensive experience in serving broadcasters’ needs at news operations around the world. EBU Radio Producers have provided logistical and technical support at major news events, including G-8 summits, European Council meetings, International AIDS Conferences and IOC meetings.

We act as go-betweens for broadcasters and event organizers not only to avoid inefficiency and incomprehension, but also to secure effective solutions for broadcast journalists working in the field. The following list is indicative of what EBU considers to be the basic conditions and facilities required by radio journalists covering scheduled news events:

Workspace

• approx. 3x3 m enclosed space with lockable door
• not necessarily soundproof, but in a quiet area of the media centre (not near the entrance or the catering area)
• furnished with 1-2 tables, 2-4 chairs and waste bin
• several power plugs per cabin (230VAC/10A) for TV monitor, computer, codec...)
• TV monitor carrying the event's pool signal and if possible major international TV channels (BBC, CNN, ARD, ...)
• 1 analogue line with phone
• 1 ISDN line (EURO ISDN standard, 2x64Kb, NT-1 terminated)
• 1 fast internet connection
• EBU audio router carrying up to 16 simultaneous audio signals (see below)

We collect the requests of broadcasters to ensure not only the distribution of workspaces and audio feeds according to needs, but also that broadcasters have access to key facilities, such as TV monitors with pool signal, analogue or ISDN phone lines and high-speed internet connections. Our Radio News Producers and technicians are always on hand to provide full technical support for journalists.

EBU Radio News assumes responsibility for distributing the audio signal to radio broadcasters. Our tailor-made operational equipment includes a matrix for feeding analogue audio signals to the workspaces, as well as desktop audio routers to enable journalists to switch between up to 16 simultaneous channels.

Broadcasters who do not bring their own transmission equipment may use the fully-equipped EBU feedpoint. As a back-up service to broadcasters, we provide recorded audio feeds from plenary sessions, press conferences, interviews and other events.

We make audio clips available via our Euroradio News exchange system. The service is provided free of charge to all EBU full and associated members. The service provides all broadcasters with additional material, while ensuring that radio stations that do not have the funds to send a journalist to Bali, can download and process audio from the event.
