The Portuguese Presidency of the EU Council of Ministers (July-December 2007) , with the support of the European Commission (Information Society and Media Directorate-General), recently organised a High-Level Seminar on Audiovisual Content Online in Lisbon.
The Portuguese Presidency invited all interested parties to discuss a set of topical, interwoven issues entailing new challenges and opportunities which are currently being dealt with in several frameworks and by several EU bodies, as well as by the business world and civil society organisations:
- First and foremost, the impact of the revision of the "Television without Frontiers" Directive and its transformation into the Audiovisual Media Services (AVMS) Directive
- The plans of the European Commission for a possible strategic approach of content online
- Current and expected developments in the field of audiovisual (film and TV) content on mobile platforms, not from a technical point of view, but rather in relation to the potential role of this new form of content delivery in the context of the growth of the audiovisual sector and its contribution both to economic development and to cultural diversity and a better circulation of European works; and
- Current and expected developments in relation to the rise of digital technologies for mastering and the distribution of film intended for cinema theatres (“d-Cinema”).
Dr Lidia Márton, Director of International Relations MTV, Hungary represented her organisation and Europe's PSBs on the panel: "The Digital Challenge for public institutions and private investors: value chain, transparency, decision-making".
