Journalist Safety

(en cours de traduction)

EBU Vice-President Boris Bergant had talks in New York on Monday with Kiyo Akasaka, Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information at the United Nations. Discussion focused on how to take forward efforts to reduce the number of journalists killed while pursuing their profession.

According to the International News Safety Institute (INSI), 166 media staff have been killed so far this year, only two short of the record 168 who died in 2006. Mr Akasaka's predecessor, Shashi Tharoor, worked closely with the EBU, the International Federation of Journalists and INSI in the successful campaign which led to the UN Security Council adopting a resolution on journalist safety last December.

Mr Bergant earlier took part in a board meeting of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, and later hosted an EBU table at the gala award dinner for the 2007 International Emmy Awards.
