European Broadcasters welcome the EU’s strong commitment to the
dynamic development of digital broadcasting
Geneva, 24 September 2008 – Today’s vote of the European Parliament confirms the importance of efficient radio spectrum management for future-oriented national and European media and audiovisual policies. In a multi-platform environment, digital terrestrial transmission is a guarantor for free-to-air viewing and helps to avoid the digital divide. MEPs managed to find a balance between a coordinated EU policy and the respect of general interest objectives, such as cultural diversity and media pluralism.
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) also welcomes the fact that the EU Parliament gives Member States the opportunity to extend their must-carry rules to all audiovisual media services, in line with the Audiovisual Media Services Directive. With the renewed rules, Member States can strengthen consumer and user rights, ensuring access to a wide, varied range of radio and television channels and services.
Jean Réveillon, EBU Director General, said “The EBU hopes that there will continue to be a clear political statement in favour of a future-oriented, and consumer-friendly broadcasting policy, in the co-decision procedure.”
