Deutsche Welle is 50...

On 27 June 2003, Germany's international broadcaster, Deutsche Welle, marked its 50th anniversary with festivities in Bonn.

Federal President Johannes Rau was the guest of honour and keynote speaker.

DW was also celebrating the official opening of its new broadcasting house as it is moving its headquarters from Cologne to Bonn.

"DW stands for independence and credibility, which will remain the priority since people all over the world value our programmes for these qualities. Nevertheless, DW’s mission needs to be extended and made more precise,"  said DW Director General Erik Bettermann.

DW Radio broadcasts in German and 29 other languages; DW-TV broadcasts around the world in German, English and Spanish as well as programme slots in Arabic, Dari and Pashto.
