Fiction: comment diriger les enfants

(en anglais uniquement)

EBU International Training Master Course organized with ZDF and the EBU TV Department, 8-10 September 2003, Mainz, Germany

Get the best from the kids you work with!

Geneva, 9 July 2003 - Working with children on TV programmes is no easy task and differs entirely from working with adults. EBU television members are aware of this and acknowledge young TV professionals' need to receive specific training for this task. Two years ago, in September 2001, the EBU International Training Unit began to address this need with a master course entitled "Children on screen", focusing on how to work with children involved in various TV programmes.

The success of this master course has led EBU International Training, in collaboration with the EBU TV Department, to further address this topic, this time focusing more specifically on the preparation time prior to the actual shoot: How can the child be accompanied and prepared?  Should a script be used or should main lines be given along with room for improvisation? How should action scenes be directed? How can space be given to the child's spontaneity whilst still abiding by the story? All in all, how can the best be obtained from each child? These are the objectives of "Directing children in Fiction", a master course co-organized by EBU International Training and ZDF, which will be held in Mainz, on ZDF premises from September 8 to 10, 2003.

The course is designed for young programme directors
(in-house or regular sub-contracting free-lancers for EBU Member organizations) who work with children in TV fiction programmes. Participants will get a chance to identify their strengths and weaknesses when directing children and learn different methods and techniques under the guidance of experienced directors:

  • Andrzej Maleszka, freelance, screenplay author and director
  • Beryl Richards, freelance, film writer, director
  • Tone C Ronning, NRK, executive producer, EBU drama series executive producer

The master course will combine plenary sessions with practical "work in group" sessions where participants will experiment together during the making of a scene with children. You can download the programme by clicking here.

Don't miss such a unique opportunity to learn from leading colleagues and improve your skills and techniques when directing children. Register now!. Final registration deadline: Friday 15 August.
