Radio Television Kosovo
Snow and poor weather in Pristina prevented
EBU Secretary General Jean Stock and Director of Television Bjørn
Erichsen to travel to Kosovo to sign the new agreement between the
EBU and RTK (headed by Agim Zatriqi). The agreement represents a
new stage in the cooperation between the two
organizations.
Jean Stock, in a recorded message to be broadcast on RTK, stressed
his "delight at the launch of this new and significant
phase for Kosovo's public broadcaster" to which he sent
his best wishes.
Bjørn Erichsen, who will soon travel to
Kosovo, recalled the EBU's pride in its support for RTK after two
years of achievements since its creation.
"The EBU feels obliged to provide
these new services to RTK to ensure the broadcaster offers viewers
in Kosovo the best news, access to sports rights, TV series, radio
services, etc.", Erichsen added.
Two EBU vice-presidents, RTVSLO Deputy
Director General Boris Bergant, and WDR Director General Fritz
Pleitgen, were able to travel by car to Pristina. Click here for Fritz Pleitgen's speech.
RTK, the past two
years
RTK was set up by the EBU in 1999 in the
framework of a joint United Nations Mission in Kosovo and
Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe mandate aimed
at establishing a public broadcasting service in Kosovo following
the conflict which had marred the region in the previous year.
RTK, the public broadcaster, went on air on
19 September 1999. Its remit is to provide news, educational and
entertainment programmes to the people of Kosovo.
On 26 February 2001 Agim Zatriqi was
appointed director of RTK.
