PRIX EUROPA 2006
Multichannel audio takes centre stage
Every year Prix Europa invites the finest European television, radio and Internet productions, as well as their makers and managers to Berlin for a week of festival and competition.
This year, Prix Europa is taking place from 14 to 21 October 2006, with its opening concert on Saturday 14 October (20:00 to 21:00 CET) given by a Portuguese World Music group Gaiteros de Lisboa.
The event is hosted by ARD/Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB) RadioMultiKulti and 20 EBU broadcasting organizations will be relaying the stereo feed broadcast on Euroradio.
In what may be the radio technology of the future, Prix Europa's opening concert audio will also be available in 5.1 surround sound in the following two ways:

Satellite Astra 1H 19°East
DVB-S Radio Service
ARD Bouquet
WDR
Funkhaus Europa
Channel 1 = Stereo
Channel 2 = 5.1 Dolby Digital (AC-3)
In order to capture the satellite signal, users need a satellite dish, a Dolby AC-3 decoder and a 5.1 amplifier/loudspeaker system. |
Internet The Internet ‘streaming’ makes use of an advanced Peer-to-Peer (P2P) distribution technology called Octoshape. The internet stream will be coded in the multichannel 5.1 format using the Advance Audio Coding (HE AAC) technology. Users at home will need a PC which is connected to a 5.1 amplifier/loudspeaker system via a S/PDIF connector or a suitable adapter (example: TERRATEC Sound System Aureon 5.1 USB MKII).
In order to decode the multichannel audio stream encoded in AAC, the user should download a WinAmp player which needs to be installed on their computer. To access the stream, users will also have to download an Octoshape plug-in. In order to this, please go to the following address: http://octoshape.com/events/prixeuropa2006.asp The quality of the Octoshape delivery may depend on the number of users: the more users, the better the system's performance. So please invite your colleagues and friends to participate and enjoy the concert. NOTE: This experiment uses a beta non-commercial version of AAC source encoder. Therefore, some signal interruptions during live webcast may not be excluded, even if the Octoshape P2P distribution system works perfectly well. |
Please note that the Internet delivery is a technical experiment and there is no guarantee of technical quality.
