Women's Sport Expert Group

Eurovision Sport operates a gender-balanced rights portfolio and is committed to working together with our Members to set the highest standards for women’s sport.

Our vision is to normalise women’s sport, to make it a standard fixture of the sports media landscape by driving increased volume and consistent coverage of women’s sport while ensuring a fair portrayal.

To strengthen and focus our commitment in a strategic way we have created a Women’s Sport Expert Group, with participants selected to represent our Membership in terms of size, geography, gender and expertise. The group has a clear roadmap, focussing its efforts around three main pillars: the strategic, the commercial and the operational. Since its creation in 2019, the expert group has been implementing initiatives to:

  • Promote and encourage further exploitation of acquired sports rights

  • Identify new commercial opportunities around women’s properties

  • Facilitate the exchange of best practices and give access to resources such as editorial guidelines and toolkits

  • Offer training on the coverage of women’s sport through webinars and masterclasses

  • Forge alliances with public authorities, sports organizations and industry partners to create a multi-stakeholder community to promote gender equality in sport.

In February 2020 we published a media handbook called “Reimagining Sport – Pathways to gender-balanced media coverage” to help those seeking to drive change in their organization. Exploring topics such as on-screen coverage, the under-representation of women in sports broadcasting and the portrayal of female athletes in the media, the handbook provides recommendations, inspiration and concrete case studies from public service media. The handbook has been included in the Olympic Library.

Partnerships is an important focus area for the expert group and we have created synergies with international federations, educational institutions and multilateral organizations such as FIFA, UN Women, the European Commission and the Council of Europe to name a few.
