13 EBU Members have triumphed at the 30th PRIX EUROPA media awards held in Berlin on 21 October.

The awards honour the best European TV, radio and online productions from the last year.

EBU Members scooped 10 of the 13 prizes awarded. Germany’s WDR, ZDF and Deutsche Welle along with RTBF (Belgium), France Télévisions (France), EER (Estonia)  RÚV (Iceland), SVT (Sweden), NRK (Norway), YLE (Finland), DR (Denmark), RTÉ (Ireland) and the BBC (United Kingdom) were all recognised for producing or co-producing the successful programmes.

Winners received bronze Taurus trophies and €6,000.

The EBU-sponsored Prix Genève award for the Most Innovative Television Fiction Script of the Year by a Newcomer was given to German-Kosovar Visar Morina; author and director of “Babai - My Father,” submitted by German EBU Member WDR.

Morina’s script dives deep into a father-son relationship in early 90s Kosovo. His unique protagonist is a 10-year old boy, whose quest to unite with his weak parent is told through laconic and exact dialogue and well determined action. The jury citation said there was an “authentic, tense atmosphere in this engaging story.”

The prize was handed over by EBU Head of Television and Future Media Jeroen Depraetere (in video above). EBU Head of Radio Graham Dixon gave out the award for Best European Radio Music Programme of the Year.

In total 231 submissions from 24 countries were nominated for awards. 270 jurors from all over Europe selected the winners.

At the Award Ceremony PRIX EUROPA President and EBU Executive Board Member Cilla Benkö appealed to the approximately 600 invited guests from politics and the media, to strengthen the worldwide fight for freedom of the press. “Societies without functioning media are also a breeding ground for extremist political movements,” said Benkö.
