The WEMF at MIPCOM

On D-day minus 59, the World Electronic Media Forum was present from the opening of MIPCOM in Cannes to make broadcasters aware of the challenge they face from the future World Summit on the Information Society.

Will the heads of state who sign the WSIS final declaration and plan of action try to restrict media independence or design an information society that does not involve them?

The WEMF, the worldwide summit of media professionals, will emphasise the greater importance of content over technology and the broadcasters’ need for independence which is the sole guarantee of credibility in the eyes of the general public.

At the MIPCOM press conference on 10 October Bjørn Erichsen, the director of the EBU Television Department, confirmed these values when speaking to more than 50 international journalists.

Guillaume Chenevière, the executive director of the WEMF, accompanied by Edouard Markiewicz, his assistant, took the opportunity to network and encourage broadcasters to take part at the highest level.

The WEMF will be held at Palexpo in Geneva from 9 to 11 December 2003 during the World Summit on the Information Society.
