The Games and the EBU Operations Group
Salt Lake

The XIX Olympic Winter Games take place in Salt Lake City, USA, in the period between 8 and 24 February 2002. Salt Lake City is located in the State of Utah by the Wasatch Mountain Range and is 1,305 m above Sea Level. Local Time is GMT -7.

The Organizing Committee is referred to as SLOC. The Host Broadcasting Organization will be International Sports Broadcasting, ISB, a television production and broadcasting company established in June 1996 and contracted by the Salt Lake City Organizing Committee.

Organization of the EBU Operations Group

As in former Olympic Games the EBU Sports Operations Group will be responsible for coordinating all of the EBU members' needs to broadcast the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympic Games. During the planning phase, the Operations Group will be the channel where EBU members place their bookings, and that responds to any queries regarding the preparations. During the operational period, the EBU Operations Group will be set up to provide the specific services required by the EBU member organizations. The Group will comprise approximately 80 people, including local staff.

Venues

The Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympic Games will focus on six primary Olympic zones: Park City, Salt Lake City West Valley City, Provo, Ogden and Soldier Hollow. The majority of the seven sports and fifteen disciplines on the Olympic programme will be held at these six zones. In addition, the Olympic Village and the Main Media Centre (MMC), which comprises the International Broadcast Centre and the Main Press Centre, will be located within the Salt Lake City area.

TV multilateral programme

EBU's intention is to broadcast all sports live from Salt Lake City to Europe. With the exception of some curling events - all sports can be broadcast live to our members. Four multilateral channels are needed to accomplish this operation. Considering the cost of telecommunications, EBU will offer four multi-channels as the best option. Two one-hour daily summaries are included in the multilaterals. The Host Broadcaster, ISB, will produce these summaries.

EBU will offer:

Four simultaneous multilateral channels.

Two one-hour daily summaries (at 17:00 and 23:00 local time), produced by ISB.

A total of 35 daily hours of multilateral retransmission, or 560 hours over the course of the Games, and 528 daily hours of unilateral retransmission, or 8448 hours over the course of the Games.
