Heading a team of five, he is responsible for invoicing Members for all the different services they take from the EBU.  This includes not only the transmissions, but also hotels, car hire and other items organised by the Operations Group on behalf of the c. 2,400 people working for EBU Members in Salt Lake City.

Giles Kennedy, 30, joined the EBU Operations Group as Logistics Manager in early 2000, having previously worked in London as a freelance producer working on news projects.  Normally based in Madrid, in Salt Lake City he heads a team of 12 staff, including four hired locally.

The logistics team in Salt Lake City is handling 2,400 accreditations in three different categories, 1,700 hotel rooms and apartments, and 350 hire cars.  "If anything goes wrong in these Games, then the Logistics department is the one that takes the brunt of it."

The logistics team has been working on the Salt Lake City games since September 1999.  "All the work is in the planning," he says.  "So far we are very happy, and I think the members are too." Giles has been in Salt Lake City since 18 January, and he works very long hours.  He does not dare to take time off to watch one of the competitions.  "If I decided to go to a venue I would just sit there worrying," he says.

Sonia Sancho

Sonia Sancho, Booking Manager, joined the EBU operations group in Madrid on 1 August 2000, just in time to go to the Olympic Games in Sydney. Previously she had worked for IMG-TWI in Barcelona. In Salt Lake City she heads a team of eight, coordinating with members constantly on their requirements for circuits, commentary positions etc. At an earlier stage she was involved in setting up the different offices for members, including ordering furniture and equipment, in the International Broadcasting Center. Sonia, who is fluent in Spanish, French, English and Italian, says that good relationships with all concerned are vital in finding quick solutions to problems that arise.
