Studio YLE

The Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE was commissioned by International Sports Broadcasting (ISB) to cover the cross-country skiing, Nordic Combined and Biathlon events held at Soldier Hollow (altitude 1,700 m) in the mountains 50 miles (80 km) east of Salt Lake City. A team of more than 60 YLE staff under the leadership of Kalevi Uusivuori will be supplying expert coverage of 25 events over 16 days. YLE is the only individual broadcaster working for ISB on the Winter Olympics.

Control room

The picture shows the inside of a production lorry during the 30-km mass start male cross-country skiing event on Saturday 9 February - the first day of competition. The director was handling pictures from more than 30 cameras, several of them mounted on snowmobiles. YLE has developed a "spotter" system to give cameramen and the director advance warning of skiers about to come into shot.

Competitors set to go for the mass start cross-country event at Soldier Hollow. Soldier Hollow has 24 km of Olympic courses that wind through 134 acres of meadowlands and open vistas.
