Two opinions

Salt Lake 2002

What did Stefan Kürten, director of the Operations Department, and Werner Rumphorst, director of the Legal Department, think of the Games?

Stefan Kürten

“I am very satisfied with these Games. For me, they have been a positive experience. Up to now I had seen them through the eyes of a broadcaster, because I was in charge of the ARD / ZDF crew in Nagano and the ZDF crew in Sydney.

Stefan Kurten“Experiencing the Salt Lake City Olympics from within the EBU has therefore been particularly interesting.

“I think the Sports Operations Group based in Madrid has done an excellent job. Members’ reactions to the work of this team have all been totally positive.

“However, I do feel the EBU really needs to promote itself better in future. The EBU must make the general public aware of the activities it does so well. Sometimes I have the impression that other broadcasters are better known than we are. We have proved to the IOC that we are its best partner in Europe. We provide Europe with almost 7,500 hours of coverage for these Games whereas, for example, NBC, the American broadcaster covering the Games, is only providing 400 hours of coverage.

“For Athens the structure is good and working well. We must simply keep up to date with technological progress and adapt ourselves to the demands."

Werner Rumphorst

“As I had handled all the contracts for the Games, it was interesting to come and see how everything fitted into place.

“When you’re here you can see what sort of problems and issues have to be taken into account in future contracts. It is important to meet the people who are looking after the future, in particular the IOC legal advisors.

Pardo and Rumphorst

“Being on site has enabled me to give a helping hand to the head of Sports Operations, Fernando Pardo, who has had a few problems to solve, in particular insurance-related matters. We were also able to send letters of protest directly from here whenever a partner did not adhere to clauses in the contract.

“Finally, attending this type of event enables us to maintain contact with the organizers. Everyone is here.”
