Difficult but successful

Salt Lake 2002

“Owing to the large number of challenges we faced, these Games were probably the most difficult to produce,” says Fernando Pardo, head of the Sports Operations Group in charge of the EBU’s operations for the Salt Lake City Olympics, “but at the end of the day everything went well despite our initial fears, particularly about transport and accommodation.

Pardo“The biggest problems were above all with the very strict security which made it very difficult to get into sites, even before the Games started. Some of us even had our equipment confiscated on our way to work at the International Broadcasting Centre!”

EBU and IOC

“Our relations with the IOC have always been good and we hope they will continue to be. The only real problem we’ve encountered here was with changes to the programmes at the end of the Games without the broadcasters, and that includes the EBU, being consulted beforehand.

“Changes to the scheduling of the closing ceremony, for example, was not easy to manage but, fortunately for us, this ceremony was broadcast in the middle of the night. As far as I’m concerned, keeping an agreed appointment is simply a matter of principle. However, ultimately it didn’t upset members’ scheduling too much.

Control room“The Sports Operations Group did an excellent job despite the difficult working conditions and sometimes tense relations with the local Olympic Committee. But at the end of the Games I noticed that EBU members were satisfied.

“Here in Salt Lake City we have provided more hours of coverage than any other operator. What’s more we invest more money in the event than all the other broadcasters put together. The EBU’s contribution to the Olympics is by far the greatest.”
