The Games - A great success

Salt Lake 2002

A success for the EBU and its members, says Jean Stock, EBU secretary general.

“As these Olympics draw to a close, we can confidently say that we have provided both quantity, in the number of offers, and quality, in transmissions and commentary. This is proof that the EBU is the ideal partner for the IOC’s European coverage of the Games.

“Furthermore, we are fulfilling our public service mission: coverage of all sports has been provided under ideal viewing conditions as the time difference was in our favour: normally, the competitions stop at nightfall but, thanks to the time difference between Salt Lake City and Europe, the main events took place at the end of the afternoon European time or even during the evening. This meant that certain sports which were marginalized in the past were located in prime time.

“Once again, I feel this shows that the EBU fulfilled its role as partner to the IOC.

“When visiting members, I noticed real satisfaction that their work was rewarded by high audience ratings in Europe, on almost all channels and in particular the major ones, such as in Germany. Furthermore these ratings were not proportional to the number of medals won. I have noticed that the members in countries which did not win any medals also had high audience figures. That is a good illustration of what we can expect of the next Olympic Games.”
