The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has reached agreement with the governing bodies of Europe’s leading sports federations to bring to television audiences a newly created multi-sport championship in 2018 – the European Sports Championships.

The event will gather the elite of European athletes in athletics, swimming, cycling, rowing, triathlon and golf in two locations, Glasgow and Berlin.

Around 1,500 athletes will compete in Berlin while at the same time, 2,900 will gather in Glasgow, a landmark in European sport which reflects the rich variety and enthusiasm for sport across Europe.

The European Sports Championships will be staged over a twelve-day period during the summer of 2018 and every four years thereafter, offering audiences more than 2,700 hours of innovative free-to-air programming.

The respective European federations, host cities and the newly created European Sports Championships have joined forces to deliver a unique event.

EBU President Jean-Paul Philippot, said: “We are delighted to be associated with this ground-breaking project that encompasses the rich diversity of European sports in a competitive event of the highest quality, which we will bring to the largest audiences possible in all of Europe on a free-to air basis.”

Hansjörg Wirz, President of European Athletics, said: “We are excited to be organising our European championships in 2018 in a coordinated way together with other leading sports. Our aim is to build further on the heritage, profile and awareness of our existing prestigious European Championships.”

Paolo Barelli, President of the Ligue Européenne de Natation, added: “With the support and commitment of the major free-to-air broadcasters around the continent, the European Sports Championships will further build the prestige of becoming a champion of Europe and act as a powerful inspiration for youngsters to participate in our sports.“
