World Radio Day

World Radio Day (WRD) on 13 February marks the anniversary of the first broadcast by UN Radio in 1946, when it transmitted its first call sign: "This is the United Nations calling the peoples of the world." World Radio Day seeks to raise awareness about the importance of radio, facilitate access to information through radio, and enhance networking among broadcasters.

This year's project initiated by the EBU, entitled "My Radio", is enriched by four videos, which can be used on social media for advocacy in the world of radio. The other contributions are audio recordings in various languages, national and/or English.  Each recording has a written introduction presenting the personality and her/his statement in written form.

A special highlight this year will be the EBU's annual meeting in conjunction with WRD, which will take place in Shanghai. The host is the EBU Associate, Shanghai Media Group (SMG), first classical music channel on the Chinese mainland. SMG's contribution will feature a live concert, on air and online, of Chinese music by the Shanghai Philharmonic, available in MUS as SM/17/01/32/01.

EBU Head of Radio Graham Dixon says: "Radio plays a very significant part in all our lives. On average, we will listen to nine years of radio in a lifetime – more than any activity except breathing and sleeping!  Radio provides a convenient way to encounter new ideas, new music and new ways of thinking, and also provides valuable company to counter isolation and loss.  Nine years of an average lifetime is indeed an impressive figure, but the real personal impact of radio cannot be quantified. World Radio Day provides a great opportunity to reflect on the power of radio."
