Meet the Eurovision Social Newswire Team

The Eurovision Social Newswire (ESN) is responsible for the verification and clearance of social media content and eye-witness reports, ensuring our journalism is accurate, reliable and fully sourced. The service is an essential part of the unique Eurovision News Exchange network that brings together European public service media newsrooms from across 50 countries, sharing breaking news stories to audiences worldwide.

Derek Bowler, Head of Social Newsgathering

Derek graduated with a BA (Hons) Degree in Journalism and New Media from the University of Limerick. Previously a senior journalist & news projects lead at Storyful, he has worked in the Eurovision News team for six years and is based in Geneva.

Mahsa Aminolahi works alongside our eyewitness media verification and digital investigations unit. She holds a Master's Degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Westminster and has more than two decades of experience covering fast-moving international news events for media organizations, including Reuters.

Thais Porto works remotely for the EBU, verifying and clearing content sourced from social media for public news broadcasters. She has a Master’s Degree in Political Science from the University of Geneva.

Thomas Normann Hougaard is an experienced journalist with a degree from the Danish School of Journalism. He is currently part of the Eurovision Social Newswire team and previously spent 11 years at national Danish broadcaster, DR, reporting on foreign news.

George Powell lives in Rio de Janeiro and works remotely for the Eurovision Social Newswire as a producer and social news gathering journalist. He studied at the Cardiff School of Journalism. He previously worked as a freelance producer, camera operator and journalist in Brazil, covering events including the Olympic Games, football World Cup and presidential elections.
