14th Legal and Public Affairs Assembly
Representatives from over 40 public service media organisations gathered in Sofia, Bulgaria for the 14th Legal and Public Affairs Assembly, on 12-13 October.
The event was hosted by Bulgarian National Radio, whose Director General Alexander Velev opened the event alongside the Deputy Minister of Culture, Mr Rumen Dimitrov.
In a first session, Assembly participants reflected on governance in a digitalised world and explored how organisations are adapting to the evolving media landscape. Members were also updated on the latest developments of the Digital Single Market where negotiations among the EU institutions on AVMS, Copyright and Telecoms are gathering speed.
Data was the focus of Day 2, with a deep dive session on the General Data Protection Regulation, directly applicable in Member States next year. Representatives from Dutch broadcaster NPO and from Czech Television shared practical experience from their respective organisations. Discussions then centred on the EU Commission's proposal for an e-Privacy Regulation, while another session examined big data from a competition law perspective with an overview of recent Commission decisions.
The Assembly was also a networking opportunity for members who were able to meet informally in a wonderful, traditional Bulgarian setting.
